Luz Maria Umpierre-Herrera, En el pais de las maravillas (Kempis puertorriqueno).

Bloomington, IN: Third Woman Press, 1982.

First edition, 38 pp. Staplebound, printed wrappers. Ghost sticker on front wrapper, sticker on rear “Distributed by Kitchen Table Women of Color Press.” A very good copy.

A beautiful pamphlet of poetry by poet & activist Umpierre-Herrera (b. 1947). “En la pais de las maravillas” translates to “In Wonderland” (like “Alice in Wonderland”) and contains poems and shape poems speaking to lesbian themes and the prejudice Umpierre faced as a Puerto Rican woman. The publisher is the wonderful Third Woman Press, founded in 1979 by Norma Alarcòn, and continues to publish works by queer women of color to this day. A sticker on the back links this copy with another famous publisher, Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, which was founded in the aftermath of Persephone Press’s demise in order to publish a much-needed second edition of the groundbreaking work, This Bridge Called My Back. In other words, this little pamphlet attests to the networks of print activism needed to see words by women of color into print.
