If you associate Sappho with female same-sex desire, you have Renée Vivien (1877-1909) to thank for it. Her love of the poet & select reading of her passionate lyrics to women, as well as their inspiration in her own life, lyrics, and love affairs, was an iconic feature of Belle Époque Paris. One of her lovers, Natalie Clifford Barney, helped publish her works. By the time feminism hit its second wave, Vivien’s verse was republished Naiad Press, and her fashion sense widely imitated.
